(Rutherford Co., NC) - A coronavirus outbreak is linked to a home health agency in Rutherford County. Fourteen cases of COVID-19 were linked to the unnamed agency, according to officials with the Foothills Health District. They say the cases include patients and their contacts. As of Saturday, there were 73 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Rutherford County.

Asheville Prepares For Massive Budget Shortfall

(Asheville, NC) - Asheville city officials are preparing for a major budget shortfall as the city deals with the effects of COVID-19. The mayor last week said they're expecting a multi-million-dollar shortfall in tax revenues. To help fill the hole, the city has announced a hiring freeze and no raises for employees. Other options include furloughing employees and putting plans to expand on hold.

Coronavirus Cases In NC Top 6,500

(Asheville, NC) - Coronavirus cases in North Carolina have topped 65-hundred. The state Department of Health and Human Services reported six-thousand-589 cases as of yesterday afternoon. So far, 192 people have died of coronavirus in the state. There are 47 cases in Buncombe County.

ReOpen NC Planning To Protest Tomorrow

(Raleigh, NC) - A group that wants Governor Cooper to end the statewide stay-at-home order plans on protesting outside the General Assembly tomorrow. A lawyer for ReOpen NC also wants the governor to clarify that his order does not prohibit political protests. A woman was arrested during last Tuesday's protest and charged with violating an executive order. ReOpen NC plans on protesting every Tuesday until the order is lifted.

Summer Classes Go Online At UNC Asheville, WCU

(Asheville, NC) - Summer classes are going online for students at the University of North Carolina Asheville and Western Carolina University. Classes will continue to be held online through the summer months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The chancellor for UNC Asheville, Nancy Cable, tells ABC-13 they already have 800 students enrolled in summer courses.

GOP Senators Want Cooper To Allow NASCAR Races

(Charlotte, NC) - Five Republican state senators are calling on Governor Cooper to allow NASCAR to continue next month at Charlotte Motor Speedway. NASCAR would typically be getting ready for the Coca-Cola 600 over Memorial Day weekend, but the coronavirus pandemic has wrecked those plans. The association said Friday it hopes to resume racing at some point next month without fans. Senators Kathy Harrington, Paul Newton, Todd Johnson, Vickie Sawyer and Carl Ford want the governor to amend his executive order to allow the race to continue in Charlotte.

Person Killed On Construction Site In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) - An investigation is underway at a Charlotte construction site where a person was killed. Fire crews were called to the scene yesterday morning on Beatties Ford Road and French Street for a "confined space rescue." A person was stuck in a hole, and a crane could be seen positioned over it. It's not clear whether the person who died was a worker, or how they ended up trapped.

Amazon, ABC Stores, Dollar General Hiring

(Charlotte, NC) - There are several businesses that are currently hiring in the Charlotte-area. Amazon is looking to fill some 75-thousand jobs nationwide to help meet the recent demand in products. ABC Stores, Dollar General, Lowes and QuikTrip are also hiring locally.

Man Killed In Yadkin River

(Linwood, NC) - A man is dead after his vehicle got submerged in the Yadkin River. Davidson County sheriff's officials say the man was backing his boat into the water at the York Hill Yadkin River access point when his vehicle went under water. The victim's name was not released. An investigation is ongoing.

Two People Shot In Lexington

(Lexington, NC) - An investigation is underway in Lexington after a man and a woman were shot. It happened around 6:30 Saturday night in front of a home on Jamaica Drive. Natori Bradley and Timothy Sanders were found suffering gunshot wounds. They're both expected to be okay. The suspects took off in an unknown vehicle. Anyone with information is urged to call Lexington PD.

Survey Underway To Name Baby Rhino At North Carolina Zoo

(Asheboro, NC) - The North Carolina Zoo is looking for help naming its baby rhino. She was born on February 24th to mom, Linda, and dad, Stormy. The zoo is asking the public to choose between four names, including Rubybelle, Etosha, Joao and Kendi. People can vote for their favorite name now through April 24th at Survey-Monkey-dot-com.
