Suspect Dies After Asheville Double Shooting
(Asheville, NC) -- The suspect in an Asheville double shooting is dead. It's been just over a week since two people were injured in a shooting at the Pisgah View Apartments. DeMarcus Royal was arrested for attempted murder, assault and several other charges. The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office say Royal has died since he was taken to Mission Hospital over the weekend.
Jobs Still Open In Asheville Area
(Asheville, NC) -- Employers are still having trouble filling jobs in the Asheville area. The director of the Mountain Area Workforce Development Board told the Citizen-Times this week that thousands of job openings would still be available even if the area's 66-hundred unemployed were hired. Unemployment rates in Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood and Madison counties still remains under four-percent.
Buncombe Former Manager To Move Into Home Confinement
(Buncombe County, NC) -- A former Buncombe County manager is moving from prison to home confinement soon. Wanda Greene was initially sentenced in 2019 for her part in a kickback scheme with a county contractor. WLOS-TV reports her sentence has been reduced for good conduct. She is eligible to move to home detention in October this year, with a release date of next March.
Solar Panels To Be Installed At Harrah's
(Asheville, NC) -- Harrah's Cherokee Center-Asheville is next in line for the city's solar project initiative. Proposals are being taken over the next few weeks for panels to be installed at the center. The first projects that have been completed as part of the initiative include a couple of fire stations, community centers and the transit station. The city's energy program coordinator says Asheville is committed to move to renewable energy by 2030.
Henderson County Dividing Opioid Settlement Funds
(Henderson County, NC) -- Henderson County is discussing ways to divide money from the state's opioid settlement. The county is receiving nearly nine-million-dollars from North Carolina's 750-million-dollar chunk, which comes from three major pharmaceutical companies accused of aiding Americans in becoming hooked on opioids. The Substance Abuse Task Force is currently meeting to decide how Henderson's money will be divided. It's expected to go into early intervention programs, criminal justice diversion and recovery support.
Runners Taking Part In Ville To Ville
(Asheville, NC) -- Runners are preparing for a 72-mile trek from Asheville to Greenville this Saturday. More than two-thousand people will take part in that annual Ville-to-Ville Craft Brew Relay, which benefits local charities. The course is broken down into 12 legs to be split between teams of three-to-six runners.
Violent Crime Ticks Up Slightly In Charlotte
(Charlotte, NC) -- Violent crime is up slightly in Charlotte. The CMPD released numbers yesterday that show a small rise of two-percent in the first quarter of 2022. Property crime incidents have also risen a hair at one-percent. On the other hand, the police department is reporting a decline in rape crimes by more than 20-percent.
SBI Investigates Charlotte Officer-Involved Shooting
(Charlotte, NC) -- The SBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in the Queen City. Officers responded to the Pringle Square Apartments on Brown Grier Road early Wednesday, when a person armed with a gun was accused of chasing someone else. The CMPD says an officer opened fire and hit someone in the leg. It's unclear if the person injured was involved in the chase or not.
Fort Mill Man Confined To Home For Capitol Riot Charge
(Fort Mill, SC) -- A Fort Mill man will be forced to spend time at home for his part in the U.S. Capitol riot. A judge sentenced Paul Colbath yesterday to a month of home confinement and three-years of probation after his guilty plea to demonstrating in the Capitol building. Prosecutors didn't push for any time behind bars because Colbath didn't show any violence. He later said that he regretted taking part.
Interstate Toll Lanes Bringing In Millions
(Charlotte, NC) -- The I-77 toll lanes are bringing in big bucks. The toll operator, I-77 Mobility Partners, told WBTV that 35-million-dollars was collected from tolls in 2021. That revenue almost doubles the amount collected in 2020, which was most likely slowed because of the pandemic. The toll stretch runs 26-miles from uptown to Iredell County.
Six Injured From Fallen Luggage Outside CLT
(Charlotte, NC) -- Fallen luggage is to blame for several injuries outside the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The CMPD says an airport bus was forced to slam on brakes near a long-term parking lot when a car pulled out early Wednesday morning. Six people were injured when bags were thrown from an overhead compartment. Injuries weren't life-threatening.
Teen Arrested For February Murder
(Charlotte, NC) -- A teen is facing charges in a northeast Charlotte homicide. A 15-year-old died after being shot outside apartments on Mallard Park Drive in late February. The CMPD arrested another 15-year-old on murder charges this week. The victim's mother told WBTV that the shooting was out of jealousy. The investigation is continuing.

(Rocky Mount, NC) -- Officials with QVC have announced the company will not rebuild its distribution center in Rocky Mount, after a massive fire destroyed most of the facility back in December, killing one worker. In a statement released Tuesday, QVC did indicate it may lease or sell the property. Fire investigators say it was one of the largest industrial blazes in state history.
North Carolina's Portion Of Infrastructure Funding For Mass Transit Will Be 176-Million
(Raleigh, NC) -- The Biden Administration has announced the awarding of nearly 20-million dollars to several public transportation systems across the country. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 176-million of that amount will go to the state of North Carolina. The funding is part of the recently passed one-point-two trillion dollar bipartisan infrastructure bill.
Fence Around Historic Market House In Fayetteville To Come Down On April 15th
(Fayetteville, NC) -- Fayetteville city leaders have announced that starting April 15th, the fencing barrier around the historic Market House, will be taken down. The fence was installed after protesters set fires and caused minor damage to the structure in the summer of 2020, following the death of George Floyd. Appeals Court Orders A Stay On Lower Court Ruling Allowing Former Felons To Vote
(Raleigh, NC) -- A North Carolina appeals court has issued a temporary restraining order against the implementation of a lower court ruling, that will allow some convicted felons to vote after being released from prison. The latest ruling from the North Carolina Court of Criminal appeals, orders the State Board of Elections not to act on any voter registration applications submitted by former felons until further notice.
Suspect Wanted For Shooting Three Of His Neighbors Caught
(Franklin County, NC) -- A Franklin County man wanted for the shooting of three of his neighbors, was captured Wednesday after being on the run for nearly 24-hours. Todd Rogers was taken into custody in the northern part of the county, about 25-miles from where the incident originally occurred in Louisburg. He was booked into the Franklin County Detention Center on three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Bond has been set at 500-thousand dollars.
Minor League Baseball Season Opens Tomorrow In North Carolina
(Zebulon, NC) -- The Carolina Mudcats held their first media day of the season Wednesday. Players, coaches and fans gathered at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, to pose for pictures and get re-acquainted. The Mudcats are a minor league affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The first game of the season will take place tomorrow night against the Down East Ducks out of Kinston.
