Asheville Community Center Unveils Expansion

(Asheville, NC) -- An updated community center in a historic Black Asheville neighborhood is now open. The eight-million-dollar expansion at the Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center began just over two-years ago. The center was unveiled last week with a new gym, swimming pool and community rooms. Asheville's parks and rec director told WLOS-TV it's an opportunity for the city to put money where they say they're going to be supportive.

Rutherford Sheriff's Office Warns Of Jury Scam

(Rutherford County, NC) -- Residents in Rutherford County are the targets of a jury scam. The sheriff's office says some people are receiving calls for not showing up for a jury summons. Scammers are attempting to draw victims into paying three-thousand-dollars for a bond fee. Investigators say no one will ever call about a warrant.

Dillsboro Welcomes Train Visitors

(Dillsboro, NC) -- The town of Dillsboro is preparing for some extra foot traffic from tourists this month. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Company is skipping its trip to the Nantahala Gorge in order to make track repairs. That means stopovers for the second-half of August will be a little longer. The head of Dillsboro's Merchants Association told WLOS-TV that they like to describe it as a charming railroad town with a vibrant craft and culinary scene.

NC Gas Prices Still On Rise

(Asheville, NC) -- Drivers across the state are continuing to feel a pinch in their wallets at the pump. Triple-A reports the price for a gallon of regular unleaded is just above three-60, which is roughly a dime above a week ago. That cost is a whopping 40-cents higher than that same time last month. Prices in western North Carolina are averaging a little lower than the rest of the state.

Spindale Celebrates Century

(Spindale, NC) -- A town in western North Carolina is celebrating 100-years of history. Spindale held a block party on Saturday to commemorate its centennial with music, a car show and fireworks. Town officials also unveiled a statute of a millworker to represent Spindale's history.

(Asheville, NC) -- Severe storms could impact the mountain region today. Damaging hail and potential tornadoes are a threat to western North Carolina, as the heat index once again rises into the triple-digits. Residents should also expect heavy rainfall.

Level 3, Enhanced Risk Of Severe Weather Issued For Central NC

(Raleigh, NC) -- The National Weather Service has placed most of the central part of North Carolina, including the Triangle, under a Level 3, Enhanced risk of severe storms developing in the region today. Strong damaging straight-line winds between 40-to-60 mph, hail and isolated tornadoes are all possible. The storm system, which will be fueled by high temperatures into the upper 90's, is expected to move across central North Carolina between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Man Drowns While Swimming In Jordan Lake Sunday

(Chatham County, NC) -- Authorities in Chatham County are investigating the death of person who drowned in Jordan Lake on Sunday. It happened early in the afternoon in the area of Poe's Ridge Boat Ramp. Witnesses say the victim, identified only as an adult male, was swimming near his boat when he disappeared under water. Search crews recovered his body a short time later near the Jordan Lake Dam. Foul play is not suspected.

Antisemitic Flyers Distributed In Five North Raleigh Neighborhoods

(Raleigh, NC) -- Police in Raleigh are searching for suspects who distributed hundreds of antisemitic flyers in at least five neighborhoods over the weekend. Investigators say the flyers were found Sunday morning in the driveways of residents in Fairfax Hills, Hickory Hills, North Hills, North Ridge and Quail Hollow. The flyers are reportedly linked to an organization known as the Goyim Defense League, which the Southern Poverty Law Center identifies as a hate group. Anyone caught distributing antisemitic flyers could be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Murder Suspect Flees After Cutting Off Monitoring Device

(Halifax County, NC) -- The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for help in locating a recently released murder suspect, who disappeared after cutting off his electronic monitoring device. The suspect, identified as 27-year old Shelvy Travon Edwards, was last seen late Friday night in the downtown area of Roanoke Rapids. Court records show he faces charges of murder, felony conspiracy, robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

NCDEQ Awarded 18.5 Million Dollar Federal Grant To Upgrade Power Grids

(Raleigh, NC) -- The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded the State of North Carolina a grant totaling 18-point-five-million dollars to help upgrade its electric power grid. According to the NC Department of Environmental Quality, the funds will also be used to harden power grids against natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes and sub freezing temperatures. In the past, such disasters have resulted in long power outages to utility customers across the state.

Little League Softball World Series Underway In Greenville

(Greenville, NC) -- Thousands of fans are in Greenville this week to attend the 2023 Little League Softball World Series. The event, which began on Saturday and runs through Sunday, August 13th, is a tournament for girls between the ages of 10 and 12 years old. Twelve teams, including eight from the U.S. and four international squads, are competing for the chance to record their names in history, as well as showcase their talents before a worldwide TV audience. All games will be played at Stallings Stadium at Elm Street Park in Greenville.

(Greensboro, NC) -- Severe weather could hit the Piedmont Triad region today. The National Weather Service says there a chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and into this evening. Damaging wind gusts over 60 miles per hour are the primary threat, although large hail and an isolated tornado are possible.

(Greensboro, NC) -- Lucas Glover is celebrating a victory at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro. The South Carolina native finished atop the leaderboard at 20 under par after shooting a 68 in the final round. With the win, the 43-year-old moves from number 112 to number 49 in the FedExCup standings, qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.

Cyclist Dies After Medical Emergency During Winston-Salem Cycling Classic

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A cyclist is dead after having a medical emergency while riding in the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic. Police say the rider was found unresponsive Saturday in the 22-hundred block of Union Cross Road. Medical personnel provided aid, but the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

One Dead In Apparent Shooting And Crash on I-40 In Greensboro.

(Greensboro, NC) -- A homicide investigation is underway following an apparent shooting and fiery crash on I-40 westbound in Greensboro. Police say the crash happened Friday near exit 216. Officers found a vehicle on fire in the center travel lane, and Dedrick Lee Wooding was discovered unconscious inside. After the fire was extinguished, police noticed damage to the vehicle consistent with gunfire. Wooding was pronounced dead at the scene.

One Hurt In Mount Airy Hit And Run

(Mount Airy, NC) -- A driver is wanted in a hit and run crash that left one person hurt in Mount Airy. Police say a person was hit by a vehicle Thursday on North Main Street near Wrenn Avenue. The driver didn't stop and remains on the loose. The victim suffered multiple pelvic fractures.
